Provenance Chain

Robert H. Sayre, ownership inscription dated October 16, 1907 → Anna E. Lloyd Reilly (1849–1937), pencil note “From the libraries of Anna Lloyd Reilly” → unresolved gap → Private Collection

Ownership Evidence

The front endpaper is signed ‘Robert H. Sayre,’ October 16, 1907. Robert Heysham Sayre III is the strongest candidate; the name, date, and comparison signature support a qualified attribution. A pencil note below the preface reads “From the libraries of Anna Lloyd Reilly,” identifying Anna E. Lloyd Reilly (1849–1937) of Altoona and Philadelphia. The endpaper also bears a penciled “480.” No Reilly–Sayre connection has been found, so the order of ownership is unestablished.

Why This Copy Matters
